(PHILADELPHIA, PA)---University of Charleston men's soccer Chad Duernberger has added to his list of honors from a magical 2009 campaign after being named the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's NCAA Division II Coach of the Year.
The former UC standout guided the Golden Eagles to a 19-4-0 overall record and a final No. 7 rating in the final national polls just two years after inheriting a winless program. Charleston rolled to the WVIAC regular season and tournament titles and also picked up the NCAA Atlantic Region championship before falling in the national quarterfinals.
In 2008, UC finished 4-11-2 during Duernberger's rookie campaign as a head coach and snapped a 26-match losing skid. He owns a 23-15-2 overall record as UC's head coach.
The 26-year old Belle, WV native was a three-time first team All-WVIAC standout during his playing career at Charleston. He also earned second team NCAA Division II All-Applachian Region honors.
Duernberger, who was also named as the 2009 WVIAC and Atlantic Region Coach of the Year, is the first WVIAC head coach to receive NCAA Division II national coaching honors. West Virginia Wesleyan's Tom Martin (1984, 1985), Derrick Leeson (1989, 1990), and Gavin Donaldson (1994) were selected for NAIA Coach of the Year accolades during the WVIAC's stint as a member of that body.
