Smith, Mull Earn March 22-28 WVIAC Baseball Honors

WJU's Noah Mull impressed a quartet of professional scouts with 13 strikeouts in Sunday's 4-1 win over Seton Hill.

Baseball Player of the Week (3/22-28):
---Devin Smith, Concord, Soph., OF, Wytheville, VA: Smith went 12-for-18 for a .667 batting average as Concord was unbeaten in five contests last week...The Wytheville, VA sophomore tallied seven doubles and a home run on his way to 19 runs batted in during the Mountain Lion victories...He also swiped three bases, walked twice, and scored six runs.

Other nominees: Wheeling Jesuit's Robbie Davia (6-10 in series versus Seton Hill), West Virginia Wesleyan's Matt Coker (4-6, 3 2B in doubleheader versus D&E), West Virginia State's Garrett Kiser (5-11, 6 RBI in five games), Pitt Johnstown's Matt Staub (9-18, 2 HR in 5-1 week), Alderson-Broaddus' Gary Valadez (3-6, 6 RBI in doubleheader sweep of Fairmont State), Seton Hill's J.R. Tenney (5-7 in three games), West Liberty's Ryan Zelinski (5-9, 7 RBI in 3-1 week).

2010 Winners: 2/22-Caigan O'Callahan (Davis & Elkins), 3/1-Pat Trettel (Seton Hill), 3/8-Kyle Allard (WV Wesleyan), 3/15-Pat Trettel (Seton Hill), 3/22-Pat Trettel (Seton Hill)/Greyson Schram (Concord), 3/29-Devin Smith (Concord).

Baseball Pitcher of the Week (3/22-28):

---Noah Mull, Wheeling Jesuit, Sr., Wheeling, WV: Mull fanned a season-high 13 batters in a 4-1 victory over Northern Division leader Seton Hill...The senior scattered three hits and only issued one walk...The former Wheeling Central HS standout leads Division II in strikeouts per nine innings and has fanned 11 or more batters in all three of his starts.

Other nominees: Concord's Chastin Akers (three-hitter, 8 K in win over Bluefield State),  Ohio Valley's Kyle Lawrence (6 K, 1 ER in win over West Liberty), West Virginia Wesleyan's Kevin Holdsworth (1 ER, 6 K in 6 IP during win over D&E), Pitt Johnstown's Drew Shaulis (7 IP, 3 R, 9 K in 4-3 win over Shepherd), Davis & Elkins' Jared Winder (7 IP, 1 R, 5 H, 7 K in 2-1 win over West Virginia Wesleyan), Alderson-Broaddus' Ronnie Whitt (four-hitter in win over Fairmont State), West Liberty's Jeff Welsh (1 ER in win over Salem International).
