WVIAC Multi-Sport Athletes Gear Up For Decathlon & Heptathlon

(GLENVILLE, W.Va.)---The 2010 West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s (WVIAC) Track & Field Championships get underway Saturday at Glenville State College with the men’s decathlon and women’s heptathlon on April 24-25. Nine men and thirteen women will test there skills over the two day competition as they look to better last year’s defending champions Ricky Kump of WV Wesleyan and Erin Beattie of Seton Hill. 

The men will compete in ten events during the two days: 100m, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400m, 110 hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, and 1500m. Only 3 competitors from last year’s decathlon return to compete for the crown (Ricky Kump – WV Wesleyan (1st), Max Beauburn – Glenville (9th), and Dan Grosso – Seton Hill (10th)). Defending champion Ricky Kump as already hit the NCAA Provisional mark this season making him the top decathlete to chase. Freshman teammate Cuylor Edgell has also hit the NCAA Provisional mark this season and is currently ranked 2nd going into this weekend’s meet. 

The women look to see its largest field in conference history (13) to compete for the title this weekend in the heptathlon. The top 4 competitors from last year’s meet return as they look to take down defending champion Erin Beattie of Seton Hill. Jasmine Claggett -  WV Wesleyan (2nd), Kate McCormick – Wheeling Jesuit (3rd), and Jenna Howell (4th) will look to close the gap on Beattie as they compete over two days in the 100H, high jump, shot put, 200m, long jump, javelin and 800m. Less than 850 points separated the top 4 in last year’s competition. Also returning from last year is Nikki Emborski – WV Wesleyan (8th) and Glenville’s Lauren Saelens (9th).
