(JOHNSTOWN, PA)---West Virginia State scored four times in the eighth inning to snap a 10-10 tie en route to a 14-10 WVIAC Tournament win over Pitt Johnstown.
The Jackets exploded for 21 hits, including eight of the extra-base variety. Robert Hawkins went 5-for-5 for WVSU with four runs batted in, three runs scored, and a home run. Bo Darby had three hits, while Ryne Holstine, Joey Jobst, Jeremy Fisher, and Jack Hudson added two each.
Pitt Johnstown clawed their back from a 9-3 deficit after six innings to tie the game at 10-10 after scoring a pair of runs in the top of the eighth. Home runs by Nick Barbera, Zach Martin, and Seth Roy keyed the Mountain Cat comeback.
Matt Whiteman doubled three times for UPJ. Barbera, Martin, and Jeff Campbell all notched two hits for the Mountain Cats as part of a 13-hit attack.
Cody Dalton started the State uprising in the eighth with an infield single to third base. Bill Smith then doubled to left field, scoring Dalton for an 11-10 Jacket lead. Josh Bower followed with a triple and then scored on a wild pitch for a 13-10 game. A Ryne Holstine single to left eventually scored Hawkins for the final tally of the day.
Reliever Jordan Butcher picked up the win for the Jackets. He worked 1 2/3 innings, allowing two hits and two unearned runs. Paul Tunink was tagged with the loss for UPJ, giving up eight hits and four earned runs in two frames.
State starter John Gale worked the first six innings. He gave up nine hits and five earned runs. UPJ's Drew Shaulis was pulled after being responsible for seven hits and five runs in three innings.
West Virginia State advances to play the loser of tonight's Seton Hill-West Virginia Wesleyan contest tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. Pitt Johnstown will face the loser of the Concord versus Alderson-Broaddus game tomorrow at noon.
