(JOHNSTOWN, PA)---Matt Whiteman's eighth inning grand slam gave Pitt Johnstown their first lead of the day and the Mountain Cats held on for a 7-5 WVIAC Tournament victory over Alderson-Broaddus.

A-B carried a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the eighth.  Drew Shaulis got things going for UPJ with a lead off triple to deep right field.  Andy Rubal drew a one-out walk from A-B pitcher Derek Patsy and then Zach Martin notched an RBI single to make it 5-3.

A base on balls to Drew Westover loaded the bases, but Justin Demek popped up for the second out of the inning to set the stage for Whiteman's heroics.  The fly to left field hit atop Point Stadium's 30-plus foot wall and then bounced over for the grand slam.

The Battlers threatened in the ninth against UPJ reliever Jon Moore.  Moore walked three hitters in the inning, but escaped the jam thanks to a double play and a running catch by Rubal in deep center off the bat of Trevor Funk.

Matt Staub earned the win for UPJ, pitching eight innings and allowing nine hits and three earned runs. Moore picked up his sixth save of the year.

A-B starter Kyle Olney struck out ten during his five inning stint, but he walked six.  The freshman also scattered six hits and surrendered two runs.  Patsy, the eventual loser, was touched for five runs and four hits in four innings of work.

Mark Ruiz and Matt Paul each had two hits for A-B.  Ruiz and Funk both scored two runs apiece for the Battlers.

Whiteman had another big day for UPJ, following yesterday's three-double effort, with a double and a homer.  Jeff Campbell and Drew Shaulis added two hits each as a part of 10-hit Mountain Cat attack.

The victory was the Mountain Cats' first in WVIAC Tournament play after three losses.  A-B becomes the first team eliminated from this season's tournament.

Pitt Johnstown will play at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday versus an opponent to be determined.
