(BLUEFIELD, W.Va.)---Once an intern, now a full-time employee.
Following his historic performance for Concord in the 2010 college baseball season, Greyson Schram had planned on staying involved with baseball by spending this summer as an intern with the Bluefield Orioles. Until the internship led to a better and potentially more permanent job opportunity.
Schram signed a contract to become a professional baseball player in the Baltimore Orioles organization on July 13. The Stanley, NC resident says he could be assigned to Bluefield of the rookie-level Appalachian League and may begin his playing career sometime in the next few days.
In 2010, Schram produced one of the best seasons in Concord and West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference history. He won the WVIAC Triple Crown with a .508 batting average, 20 home runs and 81 runs batted in over only 38 games.
He posted a stellar 1.103 slugging percentage and a .599 on-base percentage.
Schram won the WVIAC’s Player of the Year and Hitter of the Year awards. He also earned 1st-Team NCAA Division II All-America honors from the American Baseball Coaches Association, Daktronics, and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. Daktronics and the NCBWA also named him as Atlantic Region Player of the Year.
Schram led NCAA Division II in home runs per game (.53), RBIs per game (2.13), slugging and OBP. His .508 batting average was second-best in the nation and the second-best in WVIAC history.
He walked 28 times against only 11 strikeouts, stole 11 bases in 13 attempts, averaged an RBI every 1.57 at bats and a home run every 6.3 at bats.
Other former WVIAC players in Organized Baseball include Ben Watkins (Pitt Johnstown, Class A Charleston Riverdogs), Noah Mull (Wheeling Jesuit, Rookie League Arizona Padres), and Andrew Bailey (Concord, Rookie League Arizona Athletics).
Seton Hill's Pat Trettel, an consensus 2010 All-American catcher, recently signed to play at the independent league level with the American Association's Lincoln (NE) Saltdogs. The former Griffin star has assumed the starting position behind the plate and has built a .348 batting average.
