Peters, Fernandez And Grassie Notch Top WVIAC Honors

PRINCETON, W. Va. – The University of Charleston, which won the WVIAC regular and postseason championships, garnered the league’s top men’s soccer player and coach. The Golden Eagles’ Dion Peters earned WVIAC Player of the Year honors while Chris Grassie was tabbed the Coach of the Year. Wheeling Jesuit’s Ignacio Fernandez was named the Freshman of the Year.

Peters helped guide Charleston to both the regular and postseason titles. In just two tournament matches, he tallied four goals including the tournament winner. For the season, Peters led the squad with 15 goals and seven assists for 37 points. He also won the award in 2009 as a sophomore.  

Fernandez helped Wheeling Jesuit to a spot in the WVIAC Tournament championship match. En route to his Freshman of the Year honoree. Fernandez led the team with five goals and four assists for 14 points. He guided the Cardinals to the No. 3 seed and a 9-9-2 record.

Grassie guided the Golden Eagles to a 13-6 record in his first season with the squad. He coached seven student-athletes that earned all-conference honors, five of which that were named first-team honorees.

Matthew Brown (WV Wesleyan), Ivan Deyanov (Concord), Harry Machacha (Charleston), Ryan McDougall (WV Wesleyan), Jose Noriega (Alderson-Broaddus), Dion Peters (Charleston) and Rob Vincent (Charleston) were named first-team all-conference selections in 2010 and 2011.   

The Golden Eagles led the way with five first-team members. WV Wesleyan garnered four first-team honorees while Wheeling Jesuit added three. Alderson-Broaddus, Concord, Davis & Elkins and Pitt-Johnstown all had one first-team all-conference selection.
