PRINCETON, W. Va. – West Virginia Wesleyan senior quarterback Adam Neugebauer and Concord senior outside linebacker Joe Greenway have been named 2011 WVIAC Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year as selected by the league’s head coaches. The Mountain Lions’ Garin Justice has been tabbed the Coach of the Year.
The WVIAC coaches have also recognized Fairmont State’s Daniel Monroe as the Offensive Freshman of the Year while Glenville State’s Hunter McWhorter garnered the Defensive Freshman of the Year honor.
Neugebauer not only led the WVIAC in passing yards a game with 373.7, but also guided the Bobcats to a spot in the top 25. WVWC climbed as high as No. 11 in the AFCA. Neugebauer led the conference in pass efficiency (154.0) and total offense (365.2) during an outstanding season that saw his team go 9-2. Neugebauer threw for 4,111 yards and 40 touchdowns.
Greenway helped guide the Mountain Lions to their first WVIAC title since the 1990 campaign. He finished fifth in the league with 88 tackles. From his spot, Greenway picked off five passes including one that he raced for an 80-yard score. He also scooped up two fumbles on the season, tied for fourth in the league. Greenway also registered 13 tackles for a loss of 31 yards.
In his rookie campaign, Justice led Concord to a WVIAC Championship. After losing the first two games of the season, Justice helped the Mountain Lions earn a spot in the NCAA playoffs as the No. 6 seed. His team reeled off seven wins in the last eight games of the season, including a 48-40 win in the season finale against nationally ranked WV Wesleyan. In the preseason poll, the Mountain Lions were selected to finish fifth in the WVIAC.
Monroe, a native of Miami, Fla., rushed for 999 yards in 10 games for the Falcons. He averaged 99.9 yards per game and 4.8 yards per carry. On 13 of his 206 carries Monroe reached the end-zone. He helped FSU win seven games on the year.
McWhorter, a native of Horner, W. Va., helped the Pioneers to five wins under their rookie head coach. The defensive lineman registered nine tackles on the season, five of which were solo. Three of his stops were for a loss of eight yards, two of which were sacks.
